Activities include:

  • Rhythm exercises like clapping and tapping
  • Coordination skills through perceptual-motor tasks and object handling

  • Cognitive development through sequencing movements

Children enjoy varied indoor and outdoor activities, exploring different movements and using equipment such as balls, hoops, and climbing frames.

CURRICULAR ACTIVITY

CLIMBING

At St John’s School, we are proud to have a rock-climbing wall in our gymnasium. Climbing sessions are part of the Physical Education programme from Nursery class onwards (starting at age 3).

The objectives and techniques vary according to each age group. Some of the skills our children develop at preschool and primary school include:

Nursery – (3 years old)

At this stage, children begin to use the climbing wall by practising horizontal traverses approximately 20 centimetres above the ground. This helps them develop strength, balance, and foundational techniques for climbing.

Reception – (4 years old)

Children progress to climbing up to the top of the wall, which has a maximum height of 2.2 metres. They learn to handle the climbing ropes and secure their partner safely from the ground using an appropriate device (gri-gri). Safety is paramount, with protective sports mats in place and a qualified Physical Education teacher specialised in climbing supervising.

Year One – (5 years old)

At this stage, students begin lead climbing, where the climber secures the rope as they ascend while their partner manages the rope from the ground. This activity is carefully monitored by the Physical Education teacher to ensure safety.

CURRICULAR ACTIVITY

MUSIC

During their time at St John’s School Nursery and Preschool, music is a constant source of joy and learning for the children.

Our students have the opportunity to play a diverse range of musical instruments and sing a broad repertoire of songs. They explore both sound and silence, discovering the varied effects each can produce.

Children also create musical patterns, dance and practise repeating rhythms. Throughout these lessons, they explore key musical elements such as duration, pitch, tempo, timbre, and more.

CURRICULAR ACTIVITY

ICT

At St John’s School, students begin ICT lessons in Nursery and Reception, progressing into Year One. These lessons are delivered by a teacher with specialist training in the subject.

From an early age, children develop vital ICT skills, including using text, tables, images, and sounds to communicate their ideas effectively. They learn to select and organise information for specific purposes and are encouraged to experiment and explore a variety of outcomes in both real and imaginative contexts—for example, by experimenting with different colours in an image or navigating interactive games and simulations.

Additionally, children are introduced to basic programming through Robotics, using specially designed educational robots that make learning coding fun and accessible.

CURRICULAR ACTIVITY

MOTOR SKILLS

At our Nursery, we support the physical development of babies and young children by encouraging active and interactive play. For “young toddlers”, we focus on improving coordination, control, and movement through activities that build confidence and promote health. Children have access to equipment like tunnels, slopes, steps, toys, and soft play materials to encourage crawling, rolling, tumbling, and climbing.

For “toddlers”, we prioritize building confidence to take manageable risks and motivate them to be active through praise, guidance, and engaging activities. We provide versatile equipment and encourage varied movements such as squirming, slithering, stretching, and practicing different speeds. Resources like balls, hoops, mattresses, and climbing frames further support and enrich children’s physical development both indoors and outdoors.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITY

SWIMMING

St. John’s School offers affordable swimming lessons in our lovely indoor and heated pool. Children at Daycare, preschool and primary school all have the option to join the swimming programme.

The programme is all-inclusive that takes the non-swimmer from their first splash to developing confidence and competence in the water. Our learn to swim programme is designed specifically to teach children to swim and be safe around water.

We provide small group lessons for children from Young Toddlers up to Year One (ages 1 to 5). The focus is on fun, with carefully planned lessons tailored to build confidence and suit the developmental needs of each age group.

This extracurricular activity is designed to make life easier for parents and guardians, saving them extra work and time.

JUDO

JUDO FOR 3-5 YEARS OLD

At St John’s Pre-School, we are delighted to offer Judo classes as part of our extra-curricular activities for children aged 3 to 5 years.

Led by a qualified instructor experienced in early childhood development, our Judo sessions are designed to be fun, safe, and age appropriate. Through playful activities and simple movements, children begin to explore the basics of Judo while developing key physical and social skills.

Benefits of Judo at this age include:

  • Improved coordination and balance
  • Listening and concentration skills
  • Respect and self-discipline
  • Confidence-building through movement and achievement
  • Learning how to fall safely and move mindfully

The focus is not on competition, but on building confidence, respect, and teamwork in a supportive and engaging environment. Offered as an optional extra-curricular activity, our Judo classes help children develop a positive attitude towards physical activity from an early age—laying the foundation for a healthy and active lifestyle.
