Year 1 at primary school
At St. John‘s, Year One is the last school year and the first year of primary school. Mathematics and literacy are taught in a more structured way and children are introduced to the English National Curriculum.
Literacy
- Children learn to speak confidently
- Sound and name the letters of the alphabet
- Begin to read and write independently
- Use language to explore their experience
- Use capital letters, regular spaces and full stops
- Read and Spell familiar words
Numeracy
- Children learn to count reliably
- Count on and back
- Count in tens from and back to zero
- Read, write and order numbers
- Understand and use vocabulary of comparing and ordering
- Understand the operation of addition and subtraction
- Learn about shape, measure and data handling
